Finally...My Video Game Music Prayers are ANSWERED...8 bit Peoples!

Okay, How many of you out there remember playing Contra or Zelda on the good' ol OG Nintendo Entertainment System. Maybe you had that gyro guy who somehow could play along with you. I know for you swanky folk, you had the shiny grey Duck Hunt gun which somehow knew if you shot the 8 bit ducks on the screen.

One thing that I know is permanently braised to my brain is the amazing tunes from the games of the time. I think I could hum the whole Rushin' Attack Theme in my sleep....let alone the whole Metroid theme in a Coma. If you are itching to play marble madness or paperboy, I strongly suggest you try out VNES. It is a Nintendo Emulator online that is all Java based so you don't have to download or pay anything to play. Although this is a topic onto itself, I am drifting slightly off topic.

I was listening to some public radio (I think it was Foothill College radio) and heard the DJ mention 8 bit peoples and began to play a tune that sounded weirdly familiar, but brand new at the same time. I was soon to find out that this group of collective artists came together sharing a common love for classic videogames and created music with the wonderful constraints of a late 80's video game soundcards.

From the 8 Bit Peoples Mission Statement:

"The 8bitpeoples first came together in 1999 as a collective of artists sharing a common love for classic videogames and a
n approach to music which reflected this obsession. Our primary interests were to provide quality music for free and most importantly to have fun. In the years since, we have grown in rank and expanded our goals.

We continue to provide the vast majority of all our releases for free, including printable covers and inserts so that anyone with the desire to can "manufacture" physical copies of our albums. Furthermore, limited runs of most of our releases are available, offering superior sound quality to the mp3 releases and occasionally bonus tunes.

In addition to our continuing devotion to music, we now have a research & development division dedicated to the creation of software, construction of hardware, and dissemination of documentation related to our cause. Our love for the audio/visual aesthetics of early videogame consoles and homecomputers continues to provide us with the drive to push the medium to its very limits, and the
n see just how much further we can go after that ... you know, just for fun."

Grooveking Founders Featured All Over The Place!

Both founders have gotten a lot of press in the last week. I was lucky enough to corner both of them to find out what has been going on.

Doug and Brian, who are both entrepreneurs started RootPhi, a disruptive design firm about two years ago. Rootphi is actually the parent company of Grooveking. They have been working on a series of top secret projects....but have recently went public with one of them.

Doug and Brian have been designing eco-chic messenger bags with a collaboration with Timbuk2. The bags are made from a new material RootPhi calls Reclaim. The material is made from recycled plastic bags and according to Brian, has many applications.

RootPhi was recently featured on CBS Radio, PSFK, Coolhunting, Wired Magazine, and Metacool.

Stanford students beat eBay on Firefox toolbar

A group of design students at Stanford University have released an eBay toolbar for Firefox, myEBayFox, with some great bells and whistles. Besides basic search features, it removes external ads onthe site and allows users to see thumbnail pictures on ALL search items, even those sellers didn't pay for. An eBay toolbar has been long overdue. Users have petitioned for one on eBay discussion boards since October of 2005. Succumbing topopular demand, the eBay Developer's Program put a Firefox toolbar in the pipeline, but it seems that the Stanford students beat them to the punch. eBay can't be too enthusiastic about this toolbar since it cuts directly into its main sources of revenue: ads and thumbnail fees. But eBay users get a really good deal.

Check out Firefoxies.com

Hey, What do you get when you take an open source browser, models, super techies, and a fun modeling / popularity contest and you shove them all together? Well you get firefoxies! Firefoxies.com, which just went officially live today, is an entertaining website where you can vote on who is the most "firefoxy" Firefox user. You are allowed to vote once per day per person, but you can vote for as many people as you want.

Firefoxies.com, unlike many other websites spreading Firefox, took a unique approach - really nailing the internet savvy but not tech savvy.

By breaking this segment off, the founders of Firefoxies hope to get downloads from "The Myspace Type" as well as embracing the already growing Firefox community of developers and users.

"It is sorta a mash-up of people on the site. From total geeks to super models. How can it get much better." - Firefoxie Admin

Check it out and vote for Brian (one of grooveking's founders) at firefoxies.com!

A quick analysis here: What ways can we all take action to support a cause without being preachy? What do you think of what the firefoxies have done?

Groovemaster out.

Aligning creativity, design, innovation, recognition, and the greater good.

Cory, a masters student at Stanford just forwarded me over these images from the NYC Design and Build Competition in New York. Wow, the results are spectacular! Architects and engineers recently competed to see whose team could build the most impressive structure using cans of food. The 130,000 cans were then donated to the food bank of NYC in late Nov of last year. What a great idea. I really find it impressive when someone can align people's motivation to create and gain recognition with something that contributes to the greater good. What other ideas that you have do the same? Let us know!

Still One of The Coolest Product Commercials Ever

Many of you may have seen this commercial for the honda accord, but we had to post it in case you have not seen it. This Advertisement for the Honda Accord was shot in real time with no CGI involved in the sequence. It required 606 takes and cost $6 million to shoot and took 3 months to complete. Wow, now that's dedication. Click here to see the video.

A Stanford Class on Creating Infectious Behavior

Hey, We are always happy to see everyone who comes to our site daily. Grooveking has been totally charged with international visitors (Canada, UK, Vietnam, Australia, Sweden, etc, etc) Grooveon...rock the world. Over 40 thousand visitors in the last couple months! We will be announcing our new retailers in the weeks to come...stay tuned.

I wanted to fill people in on something that was of great interest to us here at Grooveking. One of our top designers, Brian Witlin, has recently been added to the teaching team for ME216B, a class on implementing product ideas by taking them to market. He has also gotten involved in a class at Stanford University's D.School on creating infectious action - dissecting the ways in which Apple, Nike, Starbucks, Nokia, P&G and other creative companies innovate and create a successfully following.

Quoting the course description:

"Project teams will be composed of master's students from diverse disciplines including engineering, design, business, the behavioral sciences, and education.

Learning how to become a better design thinker will be a major focus of this course. Students will apply the "build to think" philosophy of the d.school and create prototypes of everything from viral marketing campaigns to entire businesses."

The course has received some press recently from business week.

In this current age of innovation, it will become increasingly more important to understand the principles of what gets people excited, motivated, and willing to participate in an idea, movement, or product. We are excited to see what comes out of this class.

We will keep you up to date with all sorts of cutting edge designy stuff. Stay tuned.

Grooveking Geekout: Make Your Old Brick Cell Phone into a Bluetooth Headset With 8 Times the Battery Life!

As mentioned many times before, all of us here at Grooveking do all sorts of fun projects as designers. This one in particular I think is a lot of fun and it is fairly doable with a little patience.

"The Classic Brick Phone"
Okay, I think I got your attention! Remember the classic brick telephone? Some of you may remember it as the "Zach Morris phone" and others the awesome phone from the movie Wall Street with Michael Douglass as Gordon Gekko. I remember it as one of the coolest phones to ever come out. Have you noticed that a lot has changed from 1983 since the first cell phones were released? Everything has gotten so small and jam packed with so many features. But some of us, even if we are a small few, find some nostalgia from the classic brick phone - even if it weighs a good 7 or 8 pounds. Nostalgia and technology, how can we marry the two? The classic design with current technology? The brick phone is analog, and will not work on today's networks that are primarily digital and GSM. How do we maintain all the style and personality from the old and take advantages of the features and technologies of the new? The answer is - make a brick phone into a Bluetooth headset. What? You get the advantages of your current tricked out phone, while having the ability to use the brick phone as a Bluetooth headset. Not only that, why not use the phone battery as additional power for your Bluetooth and it weighs so much you are sure to keep your conversations short! LOL

What You Need to Convert a Brick Phone into a Bluetooth Headset.
We are going to "Geek Out" a little here. To give you a little overview of what you will be doing, you will be taking an existing Bluetooth headset, wiring it up so it can receive charge from the existing brick phone battery (increases the talk time astronomically), and allowing the Bluetooth button to be controlled through the FCN button on the cell phone. I am by no means an electrical engineer and the way that I am presenting is a hack. I can tell you, however, that it works and it is extremely robust.

Well you don't need an electrical engineering degree to pull it off. Although I don't want to get into it super technical. I will do my best to get you far along. To start off, you need to purchase a brick phone (easily found on eBay), a Bluetooth headset (preferably the Motorola HS820 for easy modification) and security torx set. From my understanding, back in the day, you would need to have a special license to own a security torx set. This way, people could not easily open up these phones. For the Motorola phone that I opened up, they even added some extra trickery. You actually spin the torx to the left to tighten and to the right to loosen (backwards of normal). Make sure you are aware each screw you take out and where it goes. I sometimes tape the removed screws to a piece of paper with a sketch to allow me to remember how to reassemble the device.

Next you will want to open the Bluetooth headset. Be very careful when doing this. What you need to do once you have opened up your Bluetooth headset is find the microphone and the speaker and extend the wires connected to both. This way you can use the mic and speaker of the Bluetooth (which probably will work better on than the vintage mic and speaker). Finally, plug in the Bluetooth headset into the AC adapter. Cut the cord about four inches from the Bluetooth. This will allow for easier power supply later. This can be seen in the diagram below.

Electronics May Be Easier Than They Appear!
My goal here is to not scare away people who do not know electronics. The next diagram is a simple schematic of how to wire the device to work. For my phone, I placed two diodes in series to prevent the Bluetooth battery from draining into the phone battery. I placed these diodes on a prototyping circuit board and soldered the in place. I connected the Bluetooth cable attached to the Bluetooth headset and wired it to the power coming from the diodes. To power the diodes, I connected the a wire from the power and ground leads of the shell of the brick phone.

Next I cut away at the existing keypad circuit board to allow the Bluetooth to fit flush. The strategy here is to line up the Bluetooth talk button with the location of the FCN (function) button (which was cut away). This way when you close up the whole phone, you can control your Bluetooth headset from pressing the FCN button. This can be seen in the next photo.

After you have mounted the Bluetooth headset on the circuitboard, mount the mic and speaker where you want them (typically near where the previous mic and speaker were located). You can secure the it the keypad more solidly by screwing the keypad circuitboard (with Bluetooth headset attached) back to the front face of the phone.

You probably have noticed by now from the photos that you will need to remove the rear circuit board in order to fit your circuit in the casing. Once you do this, you can close up the phone and it will begin charging once the battery is placed on. But before you close it up, you may want to consider placing a switch somewhere on your phone to prevent the Bluetooth from charging all the time. The Bluetooth headset will not function while it is charging. The simple solution to this is to use a piece of electrical tape to cover one of the leads of the cell phone battery when you want to use the Bluetooth. Remember, I told you my solution was a hack.

Home Stretch to "Bad-Ass-dom"
Okay, now you are almost done. It is time to charge your phone. Notice the slight blue light on the 8 button. This light will go on when you attach the cell phone battery to the back of the phone. When you place the phone in the charger, you are now charging both batteries (the cell phone and the Bluetooth). After about 5 hours, turn off charge mode (by either flipping a switch or by covering up one of the leads on the cell phone battery) and press and hold down the FCN button on your phone.

You should now be able to use the brick phone as a Bluetooth headset and look super awesome totally dude!!!!!!! Thanks for reading and feel free to submit anything interesting. As you may have noticed, our blog is completely jam packed with all sorts of random cool stuff that we make, find, or read about. We will try to repost more cool things we build as well as the new designs on our site. Groovemaster Out!

Grooveking New Product Lookout and Featured Designer Double Feature!!! - Alison Wong and Drybike

As you know, here in the Groovekindom we live in a land of design, inspiration, and some ultra cool people with some amazing ideas. Many of the people who have worked on the Grooveking project have some pretty impressive resumes. Today we want to give a little spotlight to someone who helped greatly with Grooveking's web user interface strategy: Alison Wong.

Alison Wong is a designer-of-all-trades. With a mechanical engineering degree from MIT, she has been involved in just about every industry. She's worked at Ford to develop an aluminum Explorer, at Apple Computer in the iMac division, and at Motorola designing new wi-fi cellular phones now available on the market.

Yeah, that's impressive! Besides her engineering ability, she is a human factors expert with a masters degree from Stanford. She worked at IDEO, a design consulting company, and knows how to work with people. Drybike.com sells her newest innovation.

Selecting San Francisco bicycle messengers as a group to observe, she spent time with with them to develop a product that they needed. Her product, Drybike Weathershields, concentrate on solving the problem of keeping hands warm and dry. Many commuters don't like riding in the rain but often have to. After many trials, she developed a new design that can be applied to all handlebars- they work on scooters, and motorcycles as well. She concentrates on useful, practical design that help people.

Besides making tangible products into reality (as if that wasn't enough), she is also an illustrator and graphic artist and has consulted in industries from toys to universities. Her graphic design can be seen on products sold at such stores at REI. She helps teach design at Stanford University and is trailblazing the realm of educational comics. She is spearheading a movement to make the medium become and effective educational tool. One of her books on teaching design is at: www.ahwong.com/comics/comic.html She uses the comic medium to develop handouts on mechanical engineering to motivate students to learn. All I have to say is I wish I had her around when I took high school physics.

Definitely check out her brand new website Drybike.com to get some awesome weather protection for your hands for all you bikers. We are always excited to showcase up and coming designers. Alison Wong is definitely a designer to watch. We will keep you posted with more developments in her product development pipeline (as well as ours).

Not Sure What it is But it Looks Fun To Drive!

Okay, what do you get when you collide Minority Report, a motorcycle, a car, Japanese style, video game racing fantasy, and great fuel economy? You get the Phiaro. What the heck is a Phiaro you might ask. Well, over here at Grooveking we were also intrigued.

In Japan the Phiaro fits into a class of cars that are 660cc that have many advantages over regular cars. The Japanese government wants to encourage the use of fuel economical vehicles so offer a lover tax rate on these cars. Insurance is also low, not to mention that they get great gas mileage 28 km per liter. All now come with many safety features as well, like front and side airbags and high impact doors and crumple zones in the front.

What we thought was crazy was that this thing can output 48kw (658 HP) at 7500 RPM. You would be a blur if you got into one of these! Although the Phiaro is not available currently (only a prototype), it sure shakes up the status quo (which we always like).

Let us know what you think....and as always, Groove-on. We will keep our eyes on the lookout for the coolest stuff around.

Holy Crap! Parkour is THE Coolest Sport of All Time!

Well maybe not the coolest sport (Laser Tag still is tied for first), but when members of the Groove Kingdom saw footage of Parkour, our mouths dropped. Parkour, also known as freestyle running takes Matrix like hyper chase-scene moves and inflicts them on real world urban terrain. It is a must to check out this video of some of the best in action.

According to Parkour.com, Sabastien Foucan developed the discipline of Parkour with his childhood friend David Belle, who practiced the 'Natural Method' of Parkour, Influence by his military father, also a great sportsman. Together Sabastien and David played and put in place a way of being - A Lifestyle - That lasted for more than ten years.

Heavily influenced by asian philosophy, Sabastian decided to immerse himself fully in his art in order to combat negative energy and becoming 'Fluid like water'. Becoming aware of the failings of art without context. He later chose to create his own path by developing the philosophy - His own method of learning based on autonomy, play and positive energy. Conveying to others his messages and philosophy has become Sabastien's quest. Sabastien has become a global ambassador of the Parkour / Free-Running discipline.

According to Sabastien: "Nobody ever invents anything - You're inspired and sometimes you can improve!"Sabbastien believes in the concept of "No violence, No competition, No Groups, No Chiefs."

After understanding the history and philosophies of Parkour, the Groovekindom tips it's crown in respect. Our sources have told us that although this sport has not caught on yet much in the US, people are participating all over Europe.

Hey, if you have any more info on Parkour or any other exciting activities and have some stories, footage, or photos to share, we will be happy to include you in our next post. Bonus if you are sporting Grooveking threads.

Thanks Adam for the heads up on this. Groovemaster Out.

Grooveking Technology Lookout: The Optimus Keyboard

The Grooveking team, as you probably known, is comprised of a group of designers with backgrounds from architecture to fine art to product design. Once in a while we like to let you in on some of the technology that gets us inspired to create - hence the Grooveking Technology Lookout.

Graphic designers to hardcore gamers and even the unsuspecting computer user will be thrilled by this recent innovation. Soon to be released (Feb 1, 2006), the Optimus keyboard will allow users to fully customize their keyboard. Using an open source format and OS-independent, the Optimus keyboard is built with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These OLEDs (brighter and more colorful than normal LEDs) will project letters, numbers, and even graphics and animations onto the keys instead of the standard printed keys. Gamers easily view their controls, designers can easily locate the copy and paste shortcut keys, and multi-lingual folks will be able to switch over their keyboard without having to actually switch their keyboard. This Optimus keyboard by Lebedev Studio will cost a little more (in the $200 range), but I don't think that should hinder the hard core computer user in us all. link

Grooveon Groovekings with the Groovetube!

We were just made aware of the Groovetube. What's a Groovetube you might ask? Is is Groove-King worthy? To answer your questions in order, the Groovetube is "simply a translucent plastic box that suction cups to the screen of your television. It has a grid of dividers inside it that diffuse the colors from your T.V. producing an amazing colorful abstraction of anything you watch." In terms of it being worthy of the Grooveking seal of approval, it is actually the first to meet the strict criteria - a truly Groove-King worthy product. We should retro-actively include the super cool Body Groovz Super Starz Karaoke Dance Mat and Competition Machine we wrote up previously....but anyway....back to the story.
We are excited that someone actually manufactured a product to create disco light show from your TV. Click here to check out the video and congratulations to the Groovetube for being the first Grooveking certified Quality Product. We thank you for visiting and checking our our shirts. and as always, we will keep you posted with the coolest stuff we can find. link

Housewares with an "edgy" humorous twist.

We would like to thank all of the Grooveking blog readers for submitting posts to our blog. Keep em' coming.

We recently were made aware of the following Italian housewares site "Vice Versa" showcasing a variety of houseware products. The following product, the Voodoo display con 5 coltelli cucina, we though was designed with a little extra "edgy" personality. To you product designers out there, maybe some inspiration?

Thanks to Marc Waldman for the submission.

We can now say conclusively that Grooveking.com shirts do all this for you and perhaps even more."* Click here to watch the video.

* This was neither from a scientific medical journal nor a real quote but rather one Brian and Doug made up for fun.

Yusuke Miyashita - A Rising Star in Green Design

After our recent post on treehugger.com, we thought it was the perfect time to showcase Grooveking's very own, very special "green man". Yusuke Miyashita, male spokesemodel for Grooveking and Stanford Product Designer, is making a mark in the world of green design. Yusuke is currently working on the problem of lack of nature in urban and corporate environments. People tend to get stuck under fluorescent lights in a cubicle somewhere - never get to see anything from the natural world. Yusuke is creating a slew of products that draw us back into nature even in our urban dwellings. Although we cannot disclose what Yusuke is currently working on specifically, we were able to get this awesome shot of him with a product concept in his studio in the Product Design Loft at Stanford University. We are continually awed by his dedication and passion. Look forward to future posts on his projects.

Finally Here - Grooveking 2.0!

Mr. Nice and myself, The Groovemaster would like to apologize to all of our readers for the terribly long time since our last post. We have been working around the clock, 26 hours a day, nearly 12 days a week to bring you Grooveking 2.0. Grooveking 2.0, a totally massive redesign of our website grooveking.com, was done for the many who wrote in complaining that they couldn't navigate our site. Who would have known that navigation was so important? We would like to thank the guys over at Vestal Design, Clement Valla, Allison Wong, and other HCI (Human Computer Interface) experts for their help during the massive revamp. Special thanks also to everyone who wrote in with suggestions. More posts to come soon. Thanks for your patience. Check out the new designed site at www.grooveking.com.
